My Bed

Thursday, 24th February 2011

Well, what can I tell you about this song.. Writing this was a very special moment for me. Mainly because it wasn’t for me at all. Writing songs for yourself as an artist is one thing, writing for others is a whole different ball game. Ball games never were my forte, mainly because I didn’t TRY.. Now I’m trying, enjoying the wins, and learning from the smacks in the face.

In November 2010 I met Franceska Aeschlimann, an amazing lyricist from Geneva.. She came to the UK for a few days for co-writes, so I teamed up with her & Chris Eaton to write songs for the pop market. Fran’s connections included many artists that I admired & respected, and the thought of writing songs for them was a very exciting one indeed.

One of the artists we decided to write for was Lily Allen.
I love Lily.. she’s straight-talking, quirky, energetic.. But in recent years she has experienced the traumatic heartbreak of miscarriage, not only once but twice.
This song was written as I thought about Lily, and so many other women who go through this painful experience.

Bed… I’ll often take to my bed if I’m upset. I’ll dive under my covers and immediately feel safe. Many of us were born in a bed. Bed represents life, and death. Dreams, not always reality. I thought about that feeling of being in a dream that you just don’t want to wake up from.. You’d rather stay in the dream, because reality is too hard. In that situation, time is our friend.

I don’t pretend to know what it feels like to lose a child, or go through something so heart-wrenching, but as this song wrote itself through me, I cried. A lot.
After writing ‘My Bed’, and feeling so convicted about it, I started speaking to women who had been through miscarriage and listening to their experiences. It became quite apparent that, in many of the cases I’d heard, there didn’t seem to have been much emotional support on offer, it almost felt like a taboo subject.
Thankfully, there are some organisations & campaign groups that can be found on the internet, such as The Miscarriage Association, and Chloe’s Count The Kick’s Campaign, offering support, advice & care. You are not alone.

This song is really about hope. You can live on, outside of the dream, no matter who you are or what you’re going through.
I really hope that as you listen, you will be encouraged to find the light at the end of the tunnel, if you are someone suffering a loss, or if you find yourself in a place of just needing to grasp onto what you cannot see.. If you reach out and embrace hope, you will find comfort…
Love,
Abby xx
